COMBINATION DOME LAMP AND SWITCHED AMBIENT LAMP

Abstract

A combination dome and courtesy lamp for a vehicle provides a first bulb and switch for a dome light function and a second bulb and switch for an ambient light function. The bulb for the ambient light function may include a color filter "boot" that could be changed or removed by the consumer to allow the consumer to select the color of the ambient light.

Background

It is generally know to provide a dome lamp in a vehicle to illuminate the interior of the vehicle during operation of, or access to, the vehicle during conditions of general darkness. However, vehicle occupants occasionally desire or need to have a light turned on in order to be able to do simple tasks, to converse, to monitor a small child, or to provide a greater feeling of comfort. Such known dome lamps in vehicles often provide more light than is needed or desired and can be distracting to a driver of the vehicle.

Description

According to one embodiment of the present invention, a combination dome lamp and switched ambient lamp is provided. A dome lamp assembly having a dome light source ("dome lamp"), includes a separate light source ("ambient lamp," conversation lamp, orientation lamp, etc.) of lesser brightness integrated into the dome lamp assembly. The ambient lamp is switched separately from the dome lamp and the other courtesy lamps that may be provided in the vehicle (e.g. on doors, lift gates, etc.). The switching of the ambient lamp may be accomplished using a switch on the dome lamp assembly, or a remotely located switch (such as a switch on an instrument panel, etc.).

A color filter (e.g. "boot," etc.) may be installed over the ambient lamp in order to provide "colored" light. The colored light is intended to produce a "softer" light (such as to enhance the mood of the vehicle occupants) or may be used to create a more individualized interior of the vehicle. The vehicle owner could remove the color filter "boot" for a slightly brighter and whiter ambient lamp, or could replace it with a boot having a color selected by the
