Abstract

A lighting system for a vehicle provides a combination of a light emitting diode (LED) and an organic light emitting diode (OLED) for use in a vehicle. The lighting system pairs an LED configured to provide accurate spot/task lighting (e.g. map lighting, etc.), with an OLED configured to provide broad area lighting (e.g. flood lighting, courtesy lighting, etc.). The combination of an LED light source with an OLED light source permits a single device to provide light in both a focused manner and in a flood manner to facilitate the lighting needs desired by occupants within the vehicle.

Abstract

Background

         It is generally know to provide a lamp in a vehicle to illuminate the interior of the vehicle during operation of, or access to, the vehicle during conditions of general darkness. Such lamps may be provided as dome lamps, courtesy lamps, cargo lamps, etc. and may use LEDs or incandescent-type bulbs or the like as a light source. However, such lamps are typically configured as single-purpose lamps and often do not provide a desired degree of flexibility to a user in configuring the type of light emitted from the lamp. It would be desirable to provide a single lighting system for a vehicle interior that permits an occupant to select from one or both of a "flood" type lighting and "spot" type lighting.

Description

         According to one embodiment of the present invention, a combined LED/OLED lighting system for a vehicle interior is provided that permits an occupant to select illumination from one or both of an LED portion and an OLED portion of the lighting system based on the intended application for which lighting is desired (e.g. flood lighting, spot-type lighting, etc.).

         The LED portion of the system is configured to provide spot-type (or "focused") lighting and the OLED portion of the system is configured to provide broad (or "flood" type) lighting. The LED and OLED may each be provided as a single unit or...
