The idea is to miniaturise and integrate a differential-input-differential-output mixer circuit at lowlocal-oscillator input power while offering high isolation, low emission, high output third-orderintercept-point, good spurious characteristics and frequency-selective conversion gain using theleast number of components.

Up to now Gilbert-Cell mixers with single-ended output of the mixer with separate stabilisation,matching and filtering circuits are used.

This technique is based on broad-band matching the differential output of the Gilbert-Cell mixerallowing low insertion loss in the pass band and high insertion loss in the stop band. This ensuresgood matching and suppression of the upper harmonics of the local-oscillator and the radio-frequency input. A high output third-order intercept-point of more than 24 dB, good spuriouscharacteristics, high isolation of ca. 50 dB and conversion gain of more than 6 dB have beenverified by measurements. A similar high output third-order intercept-point is achievable using theresistive broad-band attenuation circuit (pi or T-circuit) at the output, however, at the expense ofthe conversion gain.
