This disclosure relates to public telecommunication in general and, more particularly, to a way ofproviding QoS for voice, fax and voice-band data in a hybrid network, i.e. a network combiningPSTN/ISDN with a packet network, such as the Internet.

State of the Art

A) PSTN/ISDNPSTN/ISDN networks provide to the users end to end connections with a rather high servicelevel. The PSTN/ISDN is designed for real time communication. Once the connection isestablished there is a fixed delay and an assured bandwidth between the end points, the networkprovides echo control devices for voice calls if needed and/or provides other signal processingdevices if needed to guarantee� the quality required, i.e. the quality the user pays for.

B) Packet NetworkPacket networks are general-purpose data networks. There is no fixed delay between the endpoints since the packages may take different routes leading to the destination which results insomewhat longer delays and in� non equally distributed interarrival times. The data network isdesigned for bursty and non-real time traffic.

C) Combining the SCN and the packet network, such as the InternetFor network operators having separate voice and data networks the convergence of the twonetworks may result in cost savings. Considering that the volume of data traffic is or will soon besignificantly higher than the volume of voice traffic, packet network may be the preferredtechnology for the converged network, such as an IP based backbone. Media Gateways arebridging the circuit switched Time Division Multiplex TDM (sub-) network and the packetnetwork, such as the Internet IP. Voice over IP in general and virtual trunking in particular are thescenarios of interest.

Summary of the disclosure

The present disclosure describes a way of providing Quality of Service QoS for the different calltypes VoIP, Fax over IP (FoIP) and Voice Band Data over IP (VBDoIP) in a hybrid network.The SCN/IP Gateway comprises
