Background

              Several initiatives exist to shrink the overall size of desktop computers. Most initiatives require changes to various components. Conventionally, the standard Magjack, which is an  integrated RJ-45 over two USB type-A connectors, is used for this function. It is over 30-mm tall and limits the design of small form-factor systems (see Figure 1).

              An RJ-45 is a standardized registered jack. Universal serial bus is a standardized serial transfer protocol. Applications designated as 10/100 BaseT support Ethernet transfers of 10 and 100 megabits per second using unshielded twisted pair cabling and RJ-45 connectors. Applications designated as 10/100/1000 BaseT support Ethernet transfers of 100, 100, and 1000 megabits per second.

              The disclosed method is a compact version of the Magjack integrated local area network connector used on conventional board assemblies.
