Background

              Future processors that require more tightly regulated power may include several discrete application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) attached to the package to function as transient power event suppressors. A communications bus must be implemented between the ASICS to enable their functionality.

              The use of an array of local transient suppressors is new technology. The routing methods required to optimize the design for peak performance are also new.

      Routing on a multichip package can often be financially prohibitive and costly in terms of substrate surface area. The design must be implemented in a efficient manner for the correct and optimal operation of all devices. The multichip configuration must be carefully designed so that routing channels between devices do not interfere with other critical structures (see Figure 1).

      A design requirement states that routing or other disruptions cannot occur on any layer other than on that which the device is attached. However, a multiline communication bus is required to provide routing between the individual devices for full functionality.
