Background

Existing surface mount aluminum capacitors can be incorrectly placed on PCBs, even though there are recognition systems available on placement machines. In high-volume industry manufacturing, not all equipment has a vision system to capture the incorrect orientation of the component.

Currently, manufacturers depend on inspections (by specialists or scanning machines) after the aluminum capacitor is mounted on a PCB (see Figure 1). Rework is needed if a capacitor is placed incorrectly on a board, and therefore incurs additional process costs.

General Description

The disclosed method includes a pin attached on the surface mount aluminum capacitor. A hole and slot pin direction are drilled into the surface of the PCB to ensure that there is only one way to orient the capacitor (see Figure 1). In the disclosed method, an incorrectly oriented capacitor will not seat properly, and it will fall from its location.

Advantages

The disclosed method ensures a fool proof system for orienting an aluminum capacitor in only one way on a PCB.
