Disclosed is a method for an integrated positive-stop mechanism to prevent incorrect land-grid-array (LGA) package orientation and socket actuation. Benefits include improved yield and improved reliability.

Background

A critical risk area for socket assemblies is incorrectly installing the package and engaging the loading mechanism. This situation is more prominent in applications such as LGA packages, where no physical pin or ball exists to ensure alignment to the socket. Keying features are typically used and incorporated. However, they do not prevent socket actuation when the package is improperly seated, which damages both the socket and package (see Figures 1-4).

         Incorrectly orienting an LGA package into an LGA socket and engaging the socket in this configuration causes yield loss and unreliability.

         No current solution prevents the socket from being forced closed or indicates externally to the socket lid/load fixture that the LGA package is disoriented.
