Disclosed is a method for a multiport flag universal serial bus (USB) type-A and IEEE 1394 connector. Benefits include improved functionality.

Background

         A 1394 connector is a standardized 4 pins in, 6 pins out, USB2, 400 MHz receptacle.

         Customers are demanding more functionality without allowing legacy input/output (I/O) connectors to be removed, creating a requirement for space-saving I/O connectors. The smallest footprint conventionally available USB and 1394 receptacles are the single-port flag versions of each. Offering both ports requires placing the USB and the 1394 port next to each other on the printed circuit board (PCB). Conventionally available components do not afford a USB and a 1394 port in one housing, but rather in separate housings (see Figure 1).

Description

         The disclosed method is a multiport connector containing a USB type-A receptacle and a 1394 receptacle in the same housing with each port oriented in the flag (perpendicular to the PCB) direction (see Figure 2). The drawing shows the USB port located above the 1394 port, but the locations of the two ports could be reversed.
