Universal Operator Panel

Server designs often incorporate both rack (drawer) models and tower models. Ideally the same mechanical frame is used for both system types. Each system contains a rectangular operator panel with an alpha-numeric display containing two rows of sixteen characters. The orientation of the operator panel must be properly positioned for the text to be upright. Therefore, the orientation of the operator panel in the rack (drawer) will be different from that of the tower. Since the typical operator panel is rectangular, this consumes space within the mechanical frame for both operator panel orientations even though only one is used in a given configuration, resulting in wasted space.

The disclosed universal operator panel provides upright text in both rack (drawer) and tower models without rotating the entire operator panel.

A square graphical (dot addressable) display is used in the operator panel. This display orientates the text in an upright manner in either horizontal or vertical position by rotating the text orientation within the display rather than rotating the entire operator panel.

Typical text, or character, displays are made up of 5x7 dot arrays, each composing a single character. These characters are separated by blank space, and characters are added in rows and columns to create the desired size display. A table of predefined dot patterns (typically the ASCII character set) are used to determine the possible combinations of active dots.
