Abstract

This invention is a cardboard or plastic matte that holds a rectilinear arrangement of business cards. The matte is thick enough that the cards drop into place: place the matte face down on the platen and place cards in the rectangular holes. The matte also has a high-density border abound the holes, making it easy to detect the well-separated cards in software. Moreover, the matte can contain glyph indicia, including a registration marker and a glyph patch identifying the known positions and extents of the card regions to enable easy segmentation.

It is desired to scan and convert business cards to a format compatible with business card features found in most e-mail clients. One difficulty in such a system is segmenting and identifying several cards on the platen. One solution is to use Smart Platen software to find overlapping rectangles of a certain size. A difficulty in segmentation and object recognition is that cards have varying backgrounds, some having density very close to that of the scanning platen backing cover. Some cards may overlap others, obscuring content. Thus, reliable segmentation may be difficult to obtain.
