Abstract

This invention improves clinical workflow by exporting a clinical report along with images for a medical exam to a DICOM compatible removable media (e.g., CD or DVD). In current medical practice, a DICOM removable media is a widely used media to send studies to referring physicians. The exported report is easily viewable.

1. Title of Invention:

EXPORT VIEWABLE MEDICAL REPORTS TO DICOM REMOVABLE MEDIA

2. Inventor(s):

all employees of Siemens Medical Solutions USA, Inc.

3. General Purpose of Invention:

This invention improves clinical workflow by exporting a clinical report along with images for a medical exam to a DICOM compatible removable media (e.g., CD or DVD). In current medical practice, a DICOM removable media is a widely used media to send studies to referring physicians. The exported report is easily viewable.

4. Old Methods:

Currently, a DICOM CD contains only the image portion of a study. The report for a study is either faxed to the referring physician separately or is made accessible through a permitted network location. To read the complete study, referring physicians need pull data from multiple sources.

5. Disadvantages of Old Methods:

The old methods do not optimize clinical workflow.

Examples of the major disadvantages follows:

·                    Every study, report and image data are obtained from different sources, resulting in decreased efficiency of clinical workflow.

·                    When an electronic report is not readily available (e.g., network broken, access denied, etc.), in order to have a complete picture of the study a paper report must be accompanied with the study CD, which is inconvenient for storage and transfer.

6. Construction of Invention:

The invention is constructed upon the existing feature related to the exporting of studies to a DICOM removable and an existing reporting package.

To accomplish the functionality, the following may be utilized:

·                    The report is generated with an existing reporting package

·                    Images are written to a removable media as DICOM files

·                    The report is written to the same removable media as study images

·                    The report is identifiable by either self descript...
