Abstract

The structure disclosed uses thin magnetic shields abutting the sensor stack to provide high track resolution. The shields are insulated from the sensor by an insulating material, e.g., a thin layer (50 A) of Al2O3. The shield surface is planarized by chemical/Mechanical poishing and then regular shield is put on top of these side shields and the sensor stack.

  The bottom and top shields have magnetic easy axis parallel to the air bearing surface to provide high permeability for magnetic field applied perpendicular to the air bearing surface. The side shields on the other hand have magnetic easy axis perpendicular to the air bearing surface so that the permeability is high for fields coming from the side tracks
(i.e. longitudinal fields).
