Abstract

IBM has created an alternative operating environment used for client self healing. However today it is very time consuming for a user to switch from the primary operating system to the alternative operating system. That is because you can't you must shut down or hibernate the primary operating system than reboot the alternative operating system. Shutting down and rebooting is very time consuming. Our invention will allow an almost instant switch from the primary to alternative operating environment regardless of hardware configuration changes.

   IBM has created an alternative operating environment used for client self healing. However today it is very time consuming for a user to switch from the primary operating system to the alternative operating system. That is because you must shut down or hibernate the primary operating system than reboot the alternative operating system. Shutting down and rebooting is very time consuming. Also when you reboot you start from a fixed place vs. where you were last.

Today's solutions also don't support a double hibernation technique as the memory map must be consistent with the hardware and it is not possible with today's hibernation to keep the memory map of the non selected operating system in sync with a potential changing hardware.

Our invention will allow an almost instant switch from the primary to alternative operating environment regardless of hardware configuration changes.

Problem solved is rapid change from primary to secondary operating system or vice a versa. This is important as it time delay is long users will not switch to secondary operating system for diagnostics and/or problem determination.

Core idea of invention is to check to see if hardware has changed since last hibernate. If not proceed with normal hibernation. If changed proceed with full boot. Allows quick switch of operating systems yet still supports changed hardware since last hibernate.

Switch Flow:

1) Hibernate existing operating system (Primary or Secondary). Create hash of the hardware unique information and store within...
