Abstract

Disclosed is a method of systems management utilizing removable memory. This solution involves using easily accessible removable memory to store system logs and facilitate systems management of unbootable computers. The main point of this invention is to save all information necessary to analyze problems with a computer into a removable system management memory when the system is working normally. This is a much more cost effective solution than what is currently available. It also would make the data from the system accessible without having to go over a network, if the user has physical access to the system.

System Management Method utilizing Removable Memory

  There are two examples of removable memory which could be used for the implementation of this feature. The first example is standard flash memory such as smart media, compact flash or memory stick in a dedicated memory slot accessible from the outside of the computer. The other option is USB flash memory inserted into one of the existing USB ports of the system. For the case of the USB implementation, BIOS options may need to be implemented to specify if the USB memory is to be used as removable system management memory, and if there is more than one USB memory module available, which to use.

The information saved in the removable system management memory includes system configuration information (CPU, memory, video adapter, disk drives, PCI card, BIOS setting, firmware versions, etc...), hardware diagnostic information (POST log, etc...), software configuration information (OS name, OS version, device driver versions, installed software, network parameters, etc...), software diagnostic information (system event log, etc..). Some information, especially from the software level, may need to be encrypted for security reasons.
