Background

RS-232 is the designation for a standard serial communications interface.

A cost effective method is required for determining if a printed circuit board (PCB) failed to boot and/or shut down properly during testing. This requirement is conventionally met by plugging a card into a peripheral component interface (PCI) slot in the motherboard and connecting to a Host computer via an RS-232 cable. These cards have a high maintenance cost due to handling damage in high volume manufacturing.

General description

The disclosed method enables up to four probe-points on a power supply connector cable to be monitored for voltage transitions and levels. The method uses the RS-232 protocol to communicate the logic levels of the probe points to a monitoring computer through a communications (COM) port. Internally, each probe point is connected to a relay that, when closed, connects an RS-232 output signal (DTR or RTS) to one of the level sensitive input lines (CD, RI, CTS, or DSR).

The disclosed method uses a 9-pin D-type RS-232 connector and one or more relays that can close the connection between RS-232 lines when a 5-volt signal is asserted.
