Disclosed is a system to protect tape and tape drive mechanism during mid-tape recovery after power on by prohibiting tape motion if tape breakage information is stored in nonvolatile memory on single reel tape drive system.

  Figure 1 shows whole drive behavior on conventional mid-tape recovery system after tape breakage.

If power off then power on after tape breakage, mid-tape recovery process is invoked to make drive system ready state. It requires tape motion so that tape and drive mechanism are damaged. It makes problem worse and impacts to failure analysis.

     Problem: If MTR is executed after tape breakage, tape and drive mechanism are damaged since MTR goes with tape motion.

Branch 1. If drive microcode detects tape breakage while operation, it executes tape protection such as prevention of tape motion, displaying error, etc. Besides tape protection, drive microcode sotres tape breakage infromation into nonvolatile memory. Branch 2. After power off then power on, drive microcode checks cartridge is mounted in drive or not.
