Background

Currently, heat sinks are designed to meet multiple processor speeds. Therefore, users often have no choice but to use (i.e. buy) a heat sink design that they potentially do not need.

General Description

In the disclosed method, a single aluminum-extruded heat sink is used as the initial thermal solution (see Figure 1). Accessories are added to this heat sink, as needed, to increase thermal performance. Types of accessories include a copper base plate and a fin insert (see Figure 2). Accessories snap into an extruded channel on the heat sink, or slide into the side of the base extrusion (see Figures 3 and 4).

Advantages

The disclosed method enables users to add accessories to a standard aluminum-extruded heat sink, as needed, to increase thermal performance.
