A bypass valve for use in beverage machines

This bypass valve guides expansion water during heating when the pressure and/or flow are low back to the water container. During pumping the valve closes off the bypass to the water reservoir and directs the water to the brew chamber.

The invention relates to a valve assembly for use in such a bypass valve, comprising a base provided with a rim-shaped seat surrounding the flow-through opening, said seat cooperating with a resilient valve member (flexible umbrella). The rim has an undulating, 'wave' shape. This wave shape forms openings between the rim and the outer edge of the resilient valve member when the pressure and/or flow are low. At high pressure and/or flow the outer edge of the resilient valve member will close the openings by adapting the wave shape of the rim.

The small contact surface between rim and umbrella results in higher sealing forces and less scale build up. Secondly the shifting of the sealing line results in breaking of scale and cleaning of the valve seat.
