Disclosed is a method that uses an RJ45 LAN connector with integrated magnetics for RJ45 ports that are oriented vertically. Benefits include offering three key components for LAN solutions in one simple package.         

Background

For vertical LAN applications, there are currently no LAN connectors available with integrated magnetics. A current initiative explores changing desktop computers from the standard, on-board I/O connectors, to a solution with a remote I/O module cabled to the motherboard.

Offering a vertical LAN port with state of the art components requires using a separate vertical LAN jack and a separate magnetics package (see Figure 1). A separate set of indicator lights may also be required.

General Description

Figure 2 shows the disclosed method with the various sections/components labeled. The RJ45 jack (labeled RJ45 cavity), LEDs, and magnetics are all contained in one unit. Figure 3 shows a cut-away side of the components and their location in the unit. To keep the overall height of the component to a minimum, the integrated magnetics are located to the side of the RJ45 jack. Figure 3 shows the component with leads for through-hole mounting, but a surface mount version is also feasible. Figure 4 shows the disclosed method in use on a PCB.
