Abstract

Counterfeiting is as a huge problem. 250bn per year. One of the suggested solutions is that every product will have on the label a unique long number (25 digits). The consumer calls the company and they tell him if it is a good number. The problem for the counterfeiter is that he does not know many of this numbers (he can copy some in a store) and therefore if he makes counterfeit products the number on the labels will either repeat themselves or be bad numbers. It will be easy to figure out that it is counterfeit. The problem with this idea is that consumers do not want to call the company on every product they purchase. (A large article in the Economist about this problem

A generic counterfeit detector. this will be a box that you put in the store and the consumer can put a product to the box, and it will tell him if this is a genuine article. Alternatively it will be a software that is used in the checkout counter, i.e. software only solution. The solution will work without communication but could use communication if available.

The solutions is composed of two components A cheap and simple generic counterfeit detector and a scheme of what to write on the labels that can not be circumnavigated A simple test that checks that the generic counterfeit detector was not compromised

The commercial advantage to the seller is that he can claim to sell genuine goods. To the costumer that he can check that the goods that he buys are genuine and to the good producer is obvious. I assume the product will be made freely available by the producer.

The idea is not to check the 10$ imitation of an expensive product that everyone knows is counterfeit but the genuine look alike.
