Background

         Conventional systems have controlled CPU current for thermal issues using software control. No conventional system has attempted closed-loop control of the CPU current with fine enough granularity to support fast-loop response.

General description

         The disclosed method is independent, analog CPU current control. The method detects the incoming current on a CPU card and then controls the current consumed by individual CPUs through modulation of the STPCLK# signals.

         The disclosed method enables the full use of control-loop methods for hardware current control. Techniques include the use of proportional, integral, differential (PID) and fuzzy logic methods used in conventional control systems. This control is fully autonomous. The effect is that current is controlled precisely by algorithms built into the hardware.
