Abstract

With the proliferation of various wireless systems and the advance in the technology of wireless electronic devices, wireless communication devices in near future will be equipped with the capability in accessing various wireless networks. Further, such devices will no longer be used solely as the voice-centric communication. Instead, they will act as multiple-purpose/role device in the areas of Communication, Connectivity, Entertainment and Personal Digital Assistants.

PROBLEMS TO BE SOLVED

With the proliferation of various wireless systems and the advance in the technology of wireless electronic devices, wireless communication devices in near future will be equipped with the capability in accessing various wireless networks. Further, such devices will no longer be used solely as the voice-centric communication. Instead, they will act as multiple-purpose/role device in the areas of Communication, Connectivity, Entertainment and Personal Digital Assistants.

Described in this publication is a device having with multiple configurations or modes during operation. whereby each configuration or mode is a best fit for respective operating environments. The device can then be set to the most appropriate operating mode manually by the user or automatically depending how (the purpose) and where (the use and environment) the device is to be used.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

A) Support of Multiple Device’s Operating Modes

Definition:
Operating Mode – a set of device’s
i) user interfaces (look & feel),
ii) operating sequence (e.g. arrangement of menu structure),
iii) available/enabled services and applications, and
iv) feature settings & configuration.

Instead of the a fixed user interface or operating configuration, the device supports multiple operating configurations, each specifically configured to best suit the needs of the operating mode/environment the device is currently in.

The various operating mode’s configuration data are stored in non-volatile memory and depending on which operating mode is selected, the corresponding operating configuration will be used for the device’s operation.

In addition to specific use and environment, the device will also support a so-called default or universal operating mode of which will take effect when the device is not in any particular predetermined use and environment. As implied by its name, the default operating mode is meant for general purpose and is not specifically configured to best suit any particular use scenario.

B) Environment-Aware Automatic Switching of Operating Mode

With the capability of supporting pico- and personal networking, the device is able to detect its whereabouts (hereafter referred as “use-environment” or “operating context”). By making use of this information, a user-selectable option is provided, whereby the device’s active operating mode can be made dynamically and automatically selected according to the use-environment it is currently in. Each wireless network associated with a certain use-environment is mapped to the corresponding operating mode. Upon detection of a specific use-environment’s networks, the device will automatically switch its operating mode to the predefined use-environment-oriented operating mode with or without user’s intervention.

For the case when two or more co-existing/overlapping use-environments are found, a prioritization scheme...
