Electronically controlled display device for a vehicle for displaying information associated with the vehicle

Technical field of the invention

The present invention relates to an electronically controlled display device for a vehicle, such as a truck, for displaying information associated with the vehicle, such as information related to the control software of the engine, model of the vehicle, or status of the vehicle.

Background of the invention

The ever increasing development and importance of electronically or computer controlled systems of vehicles, such as the internal combustion engine of a truck, may lead to that fact that the model of the vehicle is governed more by the electronics inside the vehicle than the physical appearance thereof. That is, instead of buying the latest model of the vehicle in order to obtain a vehicle with an internal combustion engine that, for example, improves the driving economy, satisfies imposed environmental requirements, or that provides a higher effect of the engine, the haulage contractor or the driver may connect electronic control units of the vehicle to a server of a service provider and downloads the latest version of the control software in order to upgrade or replace the old version of the software thereby obtaining the new features of the engine. Accordingly, it may be hard to tell a vehicle of the latest model from a vehicle of an older model or a vehicle of a premium model from a vehicle of a more basic model. This may however give rise to problems since many haulage contractors and drivers not only desires the latest model for, for example, purposes of driving economy, but also for showing for other haulage contractors and drivers that they are driving the latest model. That is, vanity is a factor that must not be underestimated. Moreover, it would be beneficial if, for example, authorities in an easy way could identify the service status of the vehicle, for example, the period of time elapsed since the latest service or the service interval.

Brief description of the invention

An object of the present invention is thus to provide a display device for a vehicle, such as a truck, for displaying information regarding the vehicle, e.g. information regarding the control software of the engine or model of the vehicle. This and other objects are achieved according to the present invention by a display device having the features defined in the following description.

The invention is based on the idea of presenting information not directly indicated by the physical appearance of the vehicle for the world around. By arranging an electronically controlled display or sign connected with the different control systems of the vehicle on the vehicle, preferably on the front, it is possible to present or display a large amount of different types of information related to the vehicle, which otherwise would not be displayed. This solution provides several advantages. One advantage is that information regarding...
