Abstract

This is an advanced call forwarding system that relies on a built-in directory of primary and alternate numbers within the telephone of the call recipient. When an initial call to a recipient's primary number is not answered, one of the alternate numbers is automatically dialed once predetermined forwarding criteria (number of rings, elapsed time, reaching the recipient in person, etc.) has been met. The caller can also manually initiate the invention's alternate number dialing function by depressing a button. In one embodiment, one of the alternate numbers is the intended recipient's pager number so that the intended recipient is alerted by paging when the caller fails to connect through the primary number. When a pager number is dialed as an alternate, the invention automatically sends a pager message with the caller's telephone number. If the paging system permits, the invention also sends a pager message containing additional information.
