Abstract

A shoulder belt guide device is provided for selectively controlling the placement of a shoulder belt strap across the shoulder and torso of a vehicle occupant. The shoulder belt guide device has a clip member and an elastic tether. The clip member is configured to accept and moveably retain the shoulder belt strap. The elastic tether provides coupling between the clip member and a seating system of the vehicle. The clip member and the tether cooperate to enable the occupant to selectively position the shoulder belt so that optimal comfort and protection may be achieved. When not being utilized, the clip member is supported by the elastic tether and is not further coupled to the seating system.

Abstract

Background

It is well known to provide a seat belt having both a shoulder belt and a lap belt in the passenger compartment of a vehicle. The combination of the shoulder belt and the lap belt is intended to secure the occupant of the seat upon the occurrence of an event (e.g. sudden braking, collisions, impacts, accidents, crashes, sharp turns, etc.). The lap belt is designed to lay across the lap of the occupant, while the shoulder belt extends diagonally across the shoulder and torso of the occupant. The performance (i.e. including both comfort and protection) of the shoulder belt is dependant on the placement of belt across the occupant. Since vehicle occupants very substantially in size, a standard shoulder belt is not able to provide the same level of comfort and protection to every occupant. According it would be advantageous to provide a device that an occupant may selectively utilize to properly position the shoulder belt when the standard position of the shoulder belt is not the optimal position for the occupant.

Description

Referring to FIG. 1, a shoulder belt guide device 10 is shown according to a preferred embodiment. Shoulder belt guide device 10 includes a C-shaped guide (e.g. connector, retainer, etc.) shown generally as clip member 20, and a flexible linking member (e.g. bungee, elastic cord, strap, string, or wire, etc.) shown generally as tether 30. Clip member 20 and tether 30 cooperate to provide a moveable and selectively positionable shoulder belt guide device for use within a vehicle. In a particularly preferred embodiment (FIG. 3 through FIG. 5), shoulder

belt guide device 10 is shown for use with a seating system of an automobile. The shoulder belt guide device may be used with seating systems of any other types of motor vehicles (e.g. sport utility vehicles, mini-vans, vans, trucks, etc.) or other vehicle applications such as airplanes, farm equipment, and construction equipment.
