Abstract

Storage devices may be attached to a host through multiple paths and some of these paths may have a common component ( adapter, cable, switch). If a path has one of these common components fail, multiple paths may become inoperable. This disclosure addresses the ability to detect and isolate the point of failure, then disable any other paths to the device that would be affected.

When a storage device is attached to a host through multiple paths some of these paths may have a common component ( adapter, cable, switch). If a path has one of these common components fail, multiple paths may become inoperable. This solution addresses the ability to detect and isolate the point of failure, then disable any other paths to the device that would be affected. This idea would aide service personnel in determining the failing component.

This idea is for a storage device attached through a network, such as Fibre Channel. An out-of-band network would be used to communicate with the switches and the storage subsystems within the fabric. A node list of all the components within the fabric would be constructed. When a permanent error occurs for any component within the fabric , nodal analysis would be done to determine which other components might be affected and health check tests would be performed on these other components to determine there operability.

This would help isolate failing components for service personnel. This is presently a real problem in large storage networks and in some cases requires a lot of manual component swaps to find the problem .

An application would run that would be able to enable and disable the physical connection in the adapters,switches and storage subsystems. When the connection is disabled at the adapter, out-of-band monitoring of the swi...
