Background

Wireless Internet access (i.e. 802.11x) through wireless hotspots at airports, Internet cafés, etc., is usually available at a subscription price. Subscription fees are by the hour, by the day, or by the month. However, few prospective users are willing to pay fees in order to have wireless access at these hotspot locations.

General Description

The disclosed method requires that users temporarily subscribe to a free hotspot provider by filling out a one-time questionnaire through the provider’s gateway. The user then gains wireless access to the Internet, while receiving continuous streaming advertising from sponsors that target user demographics, interests, etc. This targeted advertising offsets the cost of providing the wireless access, so that users receive “free” access. Providing an alternative “free” connection may encourage more users to “go wireless”, and may accelerate the adoption rate of this technology.
