Abstract

A breakaway visor mounting bracket permits a visor for a vehicle to reposition during deployment of an airbag and retain the repositioned visor to prevent separation from the vehicle. The visor mounting bracket includes a central pivot block. A torque spring and a washer form a releasable retention mechanism to retain a visor elbow for operation of the visor during normal conditions. When the visor is positioned within a deployment path of the airbag, the force of the airbag deploying against the visor provides a torque on the visor elbow and pivot block. The torque is sufficient to compress the spring and permit a top portion of the pivot block to release from the mounting bracket so that the visor may pivot away from the airbag about a bottom portion of the pivot block.

BREAKAWAY VISOR MOUNT WITH RETENTION

Background

It is generally known to provide mounting brackets for visors within vehicles. Such mounting brackets are generally configured to permit the visor to pivot between a forward position (e.g. along a windshield) and a rearward position (e.g. along a side window). However, such known mounting brackets have several disadvantages, such as impeding the deployment of an airbag, or becoming forcibly separated from the vehicle during deployment of the airbag.

Description

A primary feature of the present invention is to provide a mounting visor for a vehicle that is operable to control a visor for movement between a forward and rearward position during normal conditions, and to permit movement of the visor away from an airbag during deployment of the airbag.

Another feature of the present invention is to provide a mounting bracket configured to retain the visor during deployment of the airbag so that the visor does not become separated from the vehicle during airbag deployment.

Another feature of the present invention is to provide a mounting bracket configured to permit restoration of the visor to its normal operating position following deployment of an airbag.
