Abstract

The Group Travel Planner (GTP) enables groups of friends, regardless of location, to plan their upcoming trips in unison. Rather than via the back and forth of group email, conference calling on the phone while surfing the web, or handling over details to one friend or a travel agent to take responsibility for everyone’s arrangements, the GTP will offer seamless group trip planning. All parties can get online together and through a shared browser view the same sites simultaneiously, and when ready be able to book travel for the group simultaneously.

Description of the Invention:

1.      I was booking a vacation with 23 friends living in various cities and it took a week of constant group emailing to plan, coordinate and make reservations. One person would send out a group email, everyone would respond to the entire group, and it became an organizational undertaking. We wated to take a group trip, so wanted to plan as a group - but wanted the planning experience to be a fun group activity leading up to the trip rather than a problematic chore.

There are many and varied companies, the larger ones being Expedia.com and Travelocity.com, offering online travel assistance, from bookings, to discounts, to video tours, to travel recommendations, to booking group travel. AOL offers the functionality of making online travel reservations through a partnership with Travelocity. Yahoo! offers this same functionality and also access to travel-oriented communities and chat boards. However, there is no site that offers the shared browsing capability for a true group experience, the additional effects of video streaming and video chat that can be offered with broadband access, or the ease of portability allowing the group to synchronize their schedules and get online at the same time to plan their fun. Other sites are focused on functionality and deals, whereas this tool will incorporate all of these and add in a fun flavor to combine functionality and entertainment. The vacation will be fun from the moment of conception, before even boarding the plane.

2.      The Group Travel Planner (GTI)) enables groups of friends, regardless of location, to plan their upcoming trips in unison. Rather than via the back and forth of group email, conference calling on the phone while surfing the web, or handing over details to one friend or a travel agent to take responsibility for everyone's arrangements, the GTP will offer seamless group trip planning. All parties can get online together and through a shared browser view the same sites simultaneously, and when ready be able to book travel for the group simultaneously (but with each friend being able to charge their portion to their own credit card rather than divvy up the checks later).
