Title:

“Universal” Sidecar Hard Disk Drive

Abstract:

Provide a plethora of configurable attachment options to connect an external hard disk to a set-top box or personal computer.

Inventor:

Kim Annon Ryal

Description of the Invention:

1.      Typically, external hard disk drives are connected to a personal computer (PC) or set-top box (STB) by a single attachment method - SCSI, 1394, USB 2, Serial ATA, etc .

2.      By providing a PCI backbone in the sidecar (an external device that contains a hard disk drive (HDD) and power supply, connection modules can be plugged into the sidecar that permit configurable connection of the PC/STB with the HDD.

The PC/STB can use any of the supported attachment/protocols to communicate with the sidecar.

The sidecar acts as a bridge controller, converting the attachment/protocol on the host side to that used by the drive.

Multiple attachments can be provided.
