Title:

Dockable Tuners for Set-Top Box

Abstract:

Provide a docking port for tuners so that a set-top box can be configured for multiple tuners, of various types, in the field.

Inventor:

Kim Annon Ryal

Description of the Invention:

1.      Currently a set-top box (STB) has a fixed tuner configuration. This means that each STB has a single function (or set of functions) as a receiver.

2.      Instead of having fixed tuners inside the STB, provide a docking port where various types of tuners could be plugged into the set-top box. Software inside the STB would automatically recognize the various tuner modules and provide the appropriate functionality.

Tuner configurations could include (multiple): NTSC, ATSC, DSS, or Digital Cable tuners.

See the attached invention disclosure data sheet.

3.      Hot plugging should not be required/allowed. An authorized installer or retailer would do this configuration.
