Description of the Invention:

1.      1394 devices, if they require sufficiently low power, can by powered by the 1394 bus. Devices that require more power must have an additional source. The most common means is simply to plug the device into line power. This requires that line power is available for devices that cannot be bus powered. Often it is inconvenient to find a place to plug in a device.

2.      For 1394 devices with intermediate power requirements, or low use cycle, a battery used as a power reservoir could provide power in excess of that provided by the bus power. When the device is idle, the battery could be automatically charged from bus power, eliminating the requirement for external (other than provided by the bus) power.
