Description of the Invention:

1.      A user can have access to emergency services using a remote control and their set-top-box. A set-top-box using a cable modem/DSL connection can be configured to provide emergency panic functionality to alert police, fire, or user defined contacts.

2.      The solution includes a remote control with a dedicated button for panic functionality and software on a Set- Top-Box that can interpret this button press. The remote control could have separate buttons on the remote fur police, fire, and user defined contacts. To eliminate false triggers, the button would be required to be held for a predetermined amount of time, or a set of buttons would have to be simultaneously pressed. When triggered, the set-tap-box would audibly signal the user that the trigger has been fired and that the set-top-box is contacting the authorities for help to arrive. The alarm can be deactivated if a false trigger has occurred by another key sequence. The set-top-box would have software that would detect the button being pressed and trigger the alarm when the time for activation has expired.
