Title:

Automatic Program Substitution

Abstract:

Use a PVR to record desired shows. Instead of putting them in a “Now Showing List,” insert them in the program guide replacing despised shows.

Inventor:

Kim Annon Ryal

Description of the Invention:

1.      I don't want my children watching "Sponge Bob". If they were available, I could use parental controls to block access to this particular show. As it exists, all I can do is block the channel - along with all other shows on that channel.

2.      Instead of blocking a show or a channel, use my PVR to record other programs and automatically insert them in the program guide, replacing the undesired shows.

The PVR is set-up to record all episodes of "Rocky & Bullwinkle" (or a variety of other shows). These are stored on the PVR's hard disk.

These alternate programming episodes do not appear in the "Now Playing" list.

Whenever "Sponge Bob" (or another undesired show) is recognized in the program guide, it is replaced by one of the stored episodes of "Rocky". If selected for viewing, the selected show (the PVR selected "Rocky" episode) is played from the PVR's hard disk. After it is viewed, the selected show (the PVR selected "Rocky" episode) is automatically deleted from the hard disk and/or may be replaced.
