Description of the Invention:

1.      On a fully digital set-top box (STB) (e.g. A-lite) there is no way to connect an analog input. This means that I cannot copy my tape of my vacation onto the DVR embedded in the STB so I can use the networking facility to distribute it throughout the house.

2.      As a "side-car" device, direct an analog input (RCA, S-video, etc.) to an encoder. The encoder transforms the analog signal into a MPEG-2 transport stream.

This "analog" transport stream is then inserted into the broadcast transport stream by overlaying a program stream (set of PIDs) in the broadcast transport stream with the "analog" transport stream. PAT and PMT replacement could also occur to identify this new program stream.

An STB connected to this device, via the usual connection, could receive the analog input as just another program. Tuning, reception, decoding and display would be transparent.

Multiple analog inputs on the "side-car" would permit insertion of multiple programs.

Adding additional tuners to the "side-car" would permit insertion of multiple programs from multiple transponders. This would permit a STB with a single tuner to receive multiple prog...
