Background

Currently, RJ45 connectors with integrated magnetics are not congruent with lower profile form factors. The size of individual components, and the way a system fits together, are becoming the limiting factor, prohibiting additional size reductions (e.g. a laptop/notebook computer can only be as thin as the components that must overlap each other, such as the CD ROM and the keyboard).

The total thickness—in a system using an RJ45 with integrated magnetics—is the height of the RJ45 connector plus the thickness of the PCB. Currently, this problem is solved by either using an edge mount RJ45 with discrete magnetics, or by using an existing RJ45 with integrated magnetics connectors (see Figure 1).

General Description

The disclosed method eliminates the thickness of the PCB from the system’s overall thickness by mounting the RJ45 on the edge instead of on top of the PCB, making the RJ45 connector with integrated magnetics the only size barrier.
