A problem encountered with direct printing, or without a
blanket transfer roll is the lack of good solid area fil1-~
in for the imaged areas,

This problem can be minimized or obviated and prints obtained
of improved quality in letterpress or planographic direct
printing by smoothing the ink on the inked master without
smearing the image, after its contact with the form roll
and prior to contact with the receiver sheet. The smoothing
can be accomplished by the use of an abhesive roller such
as a silicone elastomer coated roller rotating in the
opposite direction of the master cylinder with light
pressure so as not to smear the image, revolving at
approximately the same surface speed as the master
cylinder. Further, if the ink is also smoothed on the
form roller prior to contact with a master, prints are
obtained of still improved quality.
