The cholesteric texture transformation from the Grandjean
texture to the Focal Conic texture is improved in back-~
ground reduction by the addition of a low amplitude A,C,
signal to a D~C, transforming potential~~

The transformation which is improved is fully reported
in U,S~ Patent 3,7O4~O56~ To a DCC, transforming
potential is added an about 2 volt (peak) A,C~. potential
at about 1 KHz~. The addition of the low amplitude A,C,
signal will prevent the formation of partially trans-
formed background areas but will not erase fully trans~
formed image arease Alternatively, the low amplitude A,C,
signal can be applied separately during readout of a
formed image to clear partially transformed background
areas,
