Abstract

A polarizer with minimum loss for converting unpolarized light to plane or circularly polarized light is provided. A trapezoidal isotropic transparent media 1, for example glass, is provided with a silvered facet 2 and a layer 3 of optically negative liquid crystalline composition in the Grandjean texture on another facet. Layer 3 can be either left handed or right handed. By convention, a right handed film of optically negative liquid crystalline composition is one which has an intrinsic helical sense which will reflect right handed circularly polarized light (RHCPL), and a left handed film will reflect left handed circularly polarized light (LHCPL). Layer 3 can be either a right handed or left handed film of optically negative liquid crystalline composition, and will reflect one sense and transmit the other sense of circularly polarized light around = 2np (p = pitch and n = the refractive index of the composition).
