Abstract

Optical density modulation is provided by projecting light through an imaged member 10 having a layer 12 of partially transparent, deforma)Dle material containing dye, pigment or other light absorbent material 13~ The image comprises portions 14, ~5 and 16 of the deformable material layer having different thicknesses to thereby differentially modulate light transmitted therethrough. An optional sub- strate 11 is typically provided during deformation imaging of layer 12 and in replicating the deformation image by contacting same with another layer of softenable materia1~

Optical density modulation is provided by projecting light
through an imaged member 10 having a layer 12 of partially
transparent, deforma)Dle material containing dye, pigment or
other light absorbent material 13~ The image comprises
portions 14, ~5 and 16 of the deformable material layer
having different thicknesses to thereby differentially
modulate light transmitted therethrough. An optional sub-
strate 11 is typically provided during deformation imaging
of layer 12 and in replicating the deformation image by
contacting same with another layer of softenable materia1~

Positive images can be prepared by making the image portions
thicker than background portions of layer 12, and negative
images can be prepared by making background portions thicker
than image portions~
