Abstract

In an impact printer, a pivotable print hammer is configured in a manner designed to disperse the rebound force of the print hammer in a direction other than perpendicular to the 1ine~~.of-~printimpact. This dispersal, or inhibition, is important in allowing a high~~repetitionrate of hammer oper~ ation without excessive rebound and to ensure that the print hammer is in the "home" position at the beginning of each print cycle. In the embodiment, a rotatable cylindrically

In an impact printer, a pivotable print hammer is configured
in a manner designed to disperse the rebound force of the
print hammer in a direction other than perpendicular to the
1ine~~.of-~printimpact. This dispersal, or inhibition, is
important in allowing a high~~repetitionrate of hammer oper~
ation without excessive rebound and to ensure that the print
hammer is in the "home" position at the beginning of each
print cycle. In the embodiment, a rotatable cylindrically

shaped device formed of Energy Absorbing Rubber (EAR)
operates in conjunction with a pivotable print hammer
rebound'~~retentiOnarm. This arm has an elbow which adds
an additional surface to create angle a. As the hammer
rebounds (after impacting against a platen) against the
EAR, the repelling force Fl is reduced because of the

creation of a second force, F2, operating in a direction
perpendicular to Fl,
