To allow for a selection of print energy level and the
rapid return of the print mechanism from the print position

in an impact printer utilizing a wheel-type print element,
a feedback controlled print system is provided wherein the

entire print wheel is propelled toward a platen. In the
embodiment of FIG, 1, a character print wheel 2 mounted on
drive shaft 6 is driven by drive motor 5 mounted, in turn,
on a print lever 7. Print lever 7 passes through a rigid
support 9 providing a rigid pivot point. Pivoting of the
entire assembly about the pivot point in the direction shown
causes the print wheel to be propelled towards the platen 3.
The particular character to be printed is vertically aligned
before impact and is supported upon impact by the rigid
character/beam support backing 1. In front of the platen,
two beam stops 10 are rigidly affixed and so placed as to
prevent characters adjacent to the selected character to

strike the platen (see FIG. 2) . These stops, when impacted,
also trigger a momentary switch which would create a signal
