A liquid crystalline composition which dichroically absorbs
electromagnetic radiation and fluoresces is provided by
adding 4-dimethylamino-4'-nitro stilbene to a nematic liquid
crystalline material having a negative anisotropy.

Any nematic liquid crystalline material having negative
anisotropy can be used. Typical such nematic materials
include N- (p-methoxybenzylidene)-p-butylaniline (MBEA);

p-azoxyanisole (PAA); N- (p-ethoxybenzylidene)-p-butylaniline
(EBEA) d~-4-(2-methylhexyl)-4'-ethoxy-ct-chloro-trans-
stilbene; p-methoxybenzylidene-p'-aminophenyl-3-methyl- valerate (NBV); p-ethoxybenzylidene-p ~-aminophenyl-3-methyl-
valerate; pp '-methoxy-pentytolane (NPT); pp '-propoxyheptyl-
tolane (PHT); pp'-dioctoxytolane (DOT); trans-4-butyl-a-
chloro-4'-ethoxystilbene and Phase IV and Phase V of nematic
liquid crystalline mesophases available under the trademark
