Abstract

This device includes two elastomer coated capstans 4, 5 driven at slightly different speeds with a polyester or similar belt around both. The two reel packs 7, 8 of tape are in forced. peripheral contact with one capstan at the first and last contact points of the belt with that capstan. Since the belt is traveling at different speeds at these points (allowed by local shear deflection of the elastomer coating and caused by the different peripheral speeds of the two capstans) a tension is induced in the tape between the two reel packs according to Hooke~s Law. This accomplishes a bi~directional tape tension control with a single motor/ servo drive 2~ 3 that is theoretically capable of start/stop drives with standard inter record gaps to speeds of about 30 ips using 10 inch reel packs and to higher speeds with small tape loads.
