In a friction retard separator arranged for feeding sheets
from a stack, it is desirable to provide a fresh retard
surface periodically on account of wear, contamination,
etc., which can change the performance of the separator.

A variety of approaches have been suggested for incremen-
tally advancing a retard surfaáe in the form of a wheel or
a belt to provide a fresh retard surface.

The friction retard separator 1 proposed herein comprises a
feed belt 2 and a retard member 3 comprised of a web 4 of
retard material and guide plate 5, The retard member 3 is
arranged in nipped configuration with the feed belt 2 in an
unsupported region. It is a feature of the proposed sepa-
rator that the retard material is arranged as a web between
a supply reel 6 and a take-up reel 7. The take-up reel 7
may be spring biased by a wind-up spring (not shown), A pawl and ratchet arrangement 8 is utilized for incremen--
tally advancing the web 4 of retard material in response
to the lowering and raising of the stack elevator tray 9
which supports the stack of sheets to be fed. Each time
the elevator tray 9 is lowered for reloading or to change
paper sizes, the web 4 of retard material is incrementally
advanced by the ratchet and pawl mechanism 8 to provide a
fresh retard surface,
