When a voltage is applied between layers 14 and 18 by source
20 (switch 22 closed) elastomer 16 will wrinkle at the
variable frequency of the Sayce ruling 10. If the deflector

is moved in the direction shown by the arrow 24 on Figure 2,

the area illuminated by a light source 22~ such as a laser,
moves to an area on the deflector of higher ruling frequency
and hence larger angle of diffraction, Thus, the two first
order spots 28 and 30 shown in Figure 2 move in the

directions of the arrows 32 and 34, respectively, The zero~
order spot is blocked by stop 36, Hence~ a deflector or
scanner is provided whereby control of the speed and
direction of deflector movement determines the speed and
direction of the scanning spot(s) . The rate of frequency

change on the Sayce ruling 10 also controls, with the
deflector speeds the rate of diffraction angle change (spot
speed)
