Abstract

When using brush cleaning for removing residual toner from a photoreceptor surface P filming or scumming of the surface often results. It is proposed to modify a brush cleaner 1 to allow abrasion and removal of any film build-up on the photoreceptor surface.

When using brush cleaning for removing residual toner from a
photoreceptor surface P filming or scumming of the surface
often results. It is proposed to modify a brush cleaner 1
to allow abrasion and removal of any film build-up on the
photoreceptor surface.

If the interference of the cleaning brush with the photo-
receptor surface is greater than some critical value, abra-
sion of the surface along with any film thereon results.
This critical value of interference depends upon the photo-
receptor composition, the brush material and the brush fiber
mechanical properties and length. During the cleaning opera-
tion the brush 1 operates with an interference less than the
critical interference for abrasion.

It is proposed that the brush cleaner housing be modified so
that the cleanIng brush 1 can be lowered to increase the
interference between the brush and the photoreceptor surface
P to a value greater than the critical value for abrasion.
After a desired time interval the cleaner would be reposi-
tioned to its normal operation position. The brush lowering
operation may be carried out automatically or manually by
the machine operator.
