Abstract

Reversible light-induced dimerization of .anthracene groups produces substantial volae changes in anthracene containing polymers. This phenomenon provjdes the basis for a relief imaging system. In operation a film of an anthracene con-taining polymer is imagewise irradiated with light necessary to induce dilerization with the result that a relief image is formed due to the volume changes actompanying the dimeriza-tion. The film caa then beovercoated by a thin metallic layer to provide a reflecting surface and the image read out with any appropriate means such as, for example, an interferomete-.
