Abstract

In planographic and letterpress direct printing, the imaged plate or master is inked by the use of a form roller and the inked image transferred directly to a receiver sheet. Offset printing is much more important as a commercial process, and one of the principal reasons for this is that it is difficult to produce high quality prints by direct printing.

In planographic and letterpress direct printing, the imaged
plate or master is inked by the use of a form roller and the
inked image transferred directly to a receiver sheet. Offset
printing is much more important as a commercial process, and
one of the principal reasons for this is that it is difficult
to produce high quality prints by direct printing.

It has recently been discovered that the need for a fountain
solution on a printing press can be obviated if the master is
coated in the non-imaged areas with a silicone elastomer which
is abhesive or ink releasing, A difficulty encountered with
these and other abhesive master materials when used in direct
printing is that paper jams tend to occur because an electro-
static charge tends to build-up in the normally insulating
abhesive polymers causing paper receiver sheets to be retained
on the master or impression cylinder.

It has now been discovered that this problem of paper jamming
in which paper receiver sheets are retained on the master or
impression cylinder can be obviated by forming the non-imaged
portions of the master of an abhesive normally insulating
polymer with an amount of a quaternary ammonium salt suffi-
cient to inhibit an electrostatic charge build-up on the
master and receiver sheet so as to prevent the receiver sheet
from being retained on the master or impression cylinder, The
